SAFFORD — A Safford High Schooler is headed to Georgia to show what he can do under the hood of a car.
Hugh Larson was the top finisher in a field of 70 in the automotive division at the SkillsUSA Career and Technical Student Organization state competition, earning him the gold medal and a $10,000 scholarship to Universal Technical Institute.
The win also qualified him for the SkillsUSA National Championships at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, June 24-28.
School officials said after the finals competition, Larson plans to work in the automotive field for a short time before going on a mission for his church. Once his mission is completed, Larson plans to continue in automotives.
