Sam, Mescal fires burning on San Carlos Apache Reservation

BYLAS — Firefighters are battling two wildfires currently burning on the San Carlos Apache Reservation.

The Sam fire, about 7 miles northeast of Bylas, started at an undetermined time during the night of June 2.

The fire is at about 25 acres and firefighters are attacking it from the air.

The Mescal fire is located 16 miles southeast of Globe and ignited June 1. It’s currently at 2,364 acres and firefighters are working to protect powerlines in the area.

A Type 2 incident team assumed control as of Thursday.

Cause of both fires has not yet been determined.
