SAFFORD — Even with the sudden reallocation of 35 cases by the Arizona Department of Health Services, May ended with the fewest number of new cases of coronavirus since May 2020.

According to data released by Graham County Health Department, May 2021 saw 70 new cases, which includes 35 cases that had been previously assigned to Gila County in error.

That’s the third-lowest total of new cases since the start of the pandemic. The lowest number was nine in May 2020, followed by 13 in April 2020.

When it comes to COVID-19 related deaths, however, May reversed a downward trend. May saw five coronavirus-related deaths, up from one in April and three in March.

Through June 3, a total of 5,625 Graham County residents have tested positive, and 83 people have died, as a result of coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

Graham County Health Department continues to offer both the Johnson & Johnson one-shot, and Moderna two-shot vaccines for free for anyone 18 years old and older. Go to https://www.graham.az.gov to schedule an appointment.

According to the AZDHS COVID-19 dashboard, 26.1 percent of Graham County’s eligible population has been vaccinated through June 3.
