SAFFORD — Safford Police Officer Brooks Knight received a statewide award Monday for his work in combating impaired drivers on city streets.

Knight was named Mothers Against Drunk Driving’s 2020 DUI Officer of the Year for Southern Arizona.

“During his first year with the Safford Police Department (2016), Officer Knight was responsible for 30 percent of the department’s DUI investigations. In 2019, Officer Knight conducted 49 percent of our DUI investigations,” said Safford Police Chief Glen Orr.

“Like some agencies throughout our state and nationwide, we have experienced a decline in DUI contacts in 2020, largely due to COVID. In spite of the bar closures and sheltering in place, Officer Knight still conducted nearly a quarter of this department’s DUI investigations.”

It’s not the first time a Safford Police officer has been named the officer of the year by MADD; Tyler Cluff received the award in 2015.
