SAFFORD — During Monday’s meeting, the Safford City Council learned that in 2024, the city will be taking responsibility for another annual event.

“Veterans Day will, this year for the first year, be a City of Safford event,” said Jaime Embick, Planning and Community Development director, “and incorporate a full air show, not just an air fair.”

The Air Show will take place Nov. 9 at the airport.

“We’re bringing in talent from across the U.S., we’re bringing in some amazing aerobatic performers (and) some military performances,” said Cameron Atkins, manager of Safford Regional Airport-1LT Duane Spalsbury Field.

Two days later, on Nov. 11, the city will put on the Veterans Day Parade followed by the Veterans Day ceremony on the steps of Graham County Courthouse.

“It’s exciting to see Veterans Day be put on by the city this year. I’m looking forward seeing how that goes,” said Safford City Councilman Brad Hemphill.

Mayor Richard Ortega said he’d like the city to include veterans in the activities, and Embick said veterans will be able to enter the air show for free.

Meanwhile, the Safford Lions will continue to place the Field of Honor.

The Field of Honor was started in 2019 by former Safford City Manager and Lions Club member Horatio Skeete. Residents place a flag in honor of a family member or friend who served or is currently serving in any branch of the United State military. A tag naming the veteran or active-duty member of the military is attached to the flag pole.

The Field of Honor proved so popular with Gila Valley residents, the City Hall lawn has been completely filled and flags are also displayed on the lawn of the Graham County Courthouse. The display remains in place for one week.
