Safford Police a greater presence in school zones

SAFFORD — Over the past seven days, Safford Police report patrolling the area around city schools 39 times.

It’s an effort to improve traffic safety in school zones, according to Safford Police Captain Tyler Cluff.

“We have already seen an improvement in how traffic flows and how traffic laws are followed with some extra patrol in the areas,” Cluff said in an e-mail to Gila Valley Central.

The officers are present during key times of day when there aren’t other priority calls, including during drop-off and pick-up of students, as well as when traffic volume is increased due to residents driving to and from work.

On its social media, Safford Police alerted drivers that the department would have a stronger presence in school zones, and was creating safe zones for students and buses, placing cones to prevent cars from stopping in crossing areas.
