One of the many focuses of the Safford Police Department is to make sure City streets are safe for both motorists and pedestrians. Though not every errant driver can be cited or apprehended, it is the goal of the Department to greatly reduce the number of impaired and aggressive drivers from our streets. Without the ongoing assistance from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, this undertaking would be much more difficult.
The AzGOHS recently awarded the Safford Police Department $20,000.00 in Overtime Funding for DUI and Selective Traffic Enforcement. This funding will be used to carry out comprehensive enforcement specifically targeting DUI, speed, aggressive driver, seatbelt, distracted driver and child safety violations. An additional $8037.00 was awarded for the purchase of 2 new Portable Breathalyzer Testers (PBT’s), 1 multi-directional In-Car Radar and 1 Pole Mounted Traffic Data Collector. This equipment will benefit Safford Officers in their ongoing enforcement efforts.
In addition to DUI and Traffic Enforcement, the Safford Police Department will be working with schools and community groups in an effort to increase awareness of the risks and consequences unlawful driving creates. This Grant is part of the ongoing cooperative effort that the Safford Police Department values with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and AZGOHS Director Alberto Gutier to fund proactive enforcement in our City.
