Safford PD keeps ‘Amazon’ scam from success

SAFFORD — A Safford Police officer was in the nick of time to keep a resident from having his bank account emptied.

The officer was in the station when the victim walked in and said he was on the phone with an alleged representative of Amazon. The caller claimed the victim’s account was hacked for $500 in merchandise and was asking for information regarding the victim’s account.

The victim explained to the police that he didn’t have an Amazon account and the officer took the phone. The officer informed the caller that the police were now involved because the call was a scam and the caller immediately hung up.

The victim said he had given the caller his date of birth, the last four digits of his bank card and the card’s security code.

The officer advised him to cancel the card and get a new card from his bank, as well as to not share information over the phone.
