Update: Pedestrian dies after struck by vehicle

SAFFORD — Safford Police are investigating an accident involving a pedestrian and a single vehicle on U.S. Highway 70.

The incident occurred Tuesday at 8:06 p.m., near the Shining Times Car Wash, prompting a closure of the highway in both directions for about two hours.

Witnesses reported traffic stopped on the highway, and a truck moving into the center turning lane to bypass the stopped traffic. It was at that point, witnesses said, the truck struck the pedestrian. Safford Police have not confirmed that information.

The victim is described by police as a 45-year-old Safford resident, who succumbed to his injuries. The name of the victim was not released.

The driver was described as a 35-year-old Safford resident and, after evaluation, no signs of impairment were detected.

Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting an autopsy of the victim and Safford Police said the incident remains under investigation.

Police did not report if charges had been filed against the driver.
