SAFFORD — About three dozen people upset with the Trump administration gathered on Main Street in Safford on Saturday to make their feelings known.
Men and women, children and seniors all held signs calling on the White House and DOGE Committee to keep their hands off a number of federal programs and departments.
“This just tells me that our community is paying attention, and it is going to start affecting a lot of things that they do here locally,” said Patty Cervantez, chair of the Graham County Democratic Committee. “Our retirees, our senior citizens, we have some young people here, they have for education. So, yes, it’s touching every base here.”
The peaceful protest Saturday on the sidewalk in front of Safford City Hall was one of thousands of Hands Off protests across the country, in opposition to President Trump’s executive orders and Elon Musk’s DOGE Committee eliminating federal departments, firing and laying off numerous federal workers, and defying court orders to stop withholding allocated federal funding.
In addition to Safford, protests were held Saturday in Clifton, Sierra Vista, Globe and Silver City, N.M. More Hands Off protests are planned for April 10 and April 12, though none are currently scheduled in Graham, Greenlee or Cochise counties.
