Safford eyeing rebate program for natural gas appliances

SAFFORD — Safford homeowners could get money from the city if they opt for natural gas over electric appliances.

During its most recent work session, the Safford City Council directed staff to move forward with a rebate program for homeowners who select natural gas appliances.

Under city staff’s proposal, homeowners who replace their old appliances with more energy-efficient natural gas models would receive the following rebates:

● Natural Gas Water Heaters $50

● Natural Gas Stoves $50

● Natural Gas Clothes Dryers $50

● Natural Gas Wall heaters $50

● Natural Gas Pool/Spa Heaters $100

● Natural Gas furnaces $100

● Natural Gas generators $100

“I kind of think you don’t have enough rebate here,” said City Councilman Arnold Lopez. “Some of the products that are out there, they’re offering them rebates to buy an electric appliance at $50. So you know it’s a wash when it comes to here. I know you’re testing it now, but we may want to go to $100 in some areas just to give them a little added push.”

Energy efficient natural gas appliances typically reduce a homeowner’s utility bill by half compared to electric appliances.

Only Safford homeowners, who have an individual gas meter, would be eligible. All appliances must be new and operational. The homeowner must show a receipt/invoice showing date and location of purchase, and the homeowner is only eligible to receive the rebate within six months of the date of purchase. Water heater tanks must be a minimum of 30 gallons.

City Manager John Cassella said the rebate program would be included during 2024-25 budget talks and, if adopted, would go into effect July 1.
