SAFFORD — City of Safford employees stepped up to help the organization that helps myriad of causes throughout the region.

Safford employees presented United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties with a check for $9,246 from the employees’ 2020 fund-raising campaigns.

“First I just want to take a moment to thank our City of Safford Employee United Way Committee. They do a great job; they plan the events and do the fund-raising. Out of the $9,246 that we’re giving them tonight, 75 percent of that is from employee donations,” said Alma Flores, the city’s finance officer and chair of the Employee United Way Committee.

Safford Employees are the second-largest contributor to the United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties, behind the employees of Freeport-McMoRan.

“I’ll just also say, ‘Thank you’ for a lot of the agencies that receive money through this (that) are here today. They don’t always get a chance to say thank you but I do know that because they tell me to pass that on to the employees and the (City) Council for the generous donations we get,” said United Way CEO Adam O’Doherty.

“This is our second-longest campaign we’ve been running; Freeport and you are our senior veterans. We’re hoping to pass the torch on to other agencies as well, and show them how it’s done like you all have been doing.”
