SAFFORD — The Safford City Council voted unanimously Monday to take $2,500 out of contingency fund and donate it to the organization Feed My Starving Children, which provides meals for hungry children worldwide.
“Last year, we were able as a community — or multiple communities in our area —come to together and we provided 108,000 meals for the starving children. This year the plan is to increase that to a little over 160,000 meals,” said Dr. Rex Bryce, the local coordinator for Feed My Starving Children.
Bryce said he donating use of his business, Ponderosa Aviation, for the effort.
City Manager John Cassella said organizing the effort in Safford will result in a stimulated local economy, as people from outside the area come to volunteer in packing meals. It will also attract attention to the services offered at Safford Airport.
Feed My Starving Children is a non-denominational Christian nonprofit founded in 1987 in Minnesota, creating “manna packs” of nutritious food to be given free to children around the world facing food insecurity.
