SAFFORD — The Safford City Council committed another $427,236 to development of a new park.

During its most recent meeting, the council unanimously approved a contract with the design firm Kimley-Horn to complete engineering of a new park at 8th Avenue and Discovery Park Boulevard.

“There was a phase one that we had some ARPA funding for,” said Gabe Bowman, assistant city engineer. “They came and presented and they did a phase one, phase two and a phase three. So this would be for the engineering for completion for phase two and phase three.”

The funds will be used to complete the engineering and construction documents for the park.

The first phase will involve design of a custom splash pad and the outdoor amphitheater. Design for phases two and three will include all other park amenities, including pickleball courts, playground equipment areas, zipline, food truck vending area, landscaping, parking and shade structures.

Total park cost, from design to construction, is estimated at $8.9 million.
