SAFFORD — Safford City Manager John Cassella laid out the vision statement for the City Council on Monday, and the council went all in, voting unanimously to adopt.

“I like the fact that it says this is a beginning, and it ties it to our long-term strategic budgetary goals,” said Councilman Steve McGaughey.

As outlined by Cassella, the vision statement, “is to serve as a catalyst for our community in creating an engaging environment that will produce a high quality of life, including a robust economic climate that encourages business development, a culturally rich and vibrant Downtown corridor that emphasizes community events and cultural heritage, and the creation of diverse recreational opportunities with an emphasis on activities that utilize the natural climate and beauty of our region.”

Strategic goals of the vision statement include:

● Quality of life

● Infrastructure development and maintenance

● Financial management

● Growth and development

● Intergovernmental cooperation

● Legislative advocacy

● Business relations and development

● Use of technology

● Public information and outreach

● Human Resources management

The city is already moving forward on many of the strategic goals, including parks development; citywide beautification; planning of a business engagement event; and improving communication with the public through traditional and social media.

The vision statement also includes a look at development of new city facilities, including a municipal complex, Fire Department needs and a recreation complex/field house.

The vision statement will be used to help prioritize annual operating and capital improvement budgets.
