Retail, restaurant sales fall in Willcox, hotel sales up

SIERRA VISTA — May was a tough economic month for Willcox.

Southeast Arizona Economic Development Group reported, when adjusted for inflation, retail sales dropped 21.3 percent in Willcox in May. It was the second month in a row of double-digit declines

 Retail sales are also down year-to-date, through by just 0.9 percent.

Restaurant and bar sales were also down in May, down 2.7 percent, and were down 5.5 percent year-to-date.

The bright spot for Willcox was in hotel/motel sales, which were up 9.7 percent in May. However, sales year-to-date were down 7.8 percent as compared to the same time last year.

Countywide, retail sales were down 1.8 percent in May, restaurant and bar sales were up 9.7 percent and hotel/motel sales were flat up 2.8 percent.
