Raymond M. Peru Sr.

Raymond M. Peru Sr., 88, of Safford, peacefully entered into eternal rest early Sunday morning, March 27, at the Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center, with his family by his side.

Raymond is preceded in death by his father, Julian Peru, and mother, Adelina Peru.

Raymond was born in Solomon in 1927, and served in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged by both the Army and the Air Force. After serving his country, he married Felipa Abeyta on Aug. 13, 1955. In that union, they had four children: Hanna Peru, Steven (Barbara) Peru, Judy (Danny) Combs and Ray (Marie) Peru Jr.

Raymond worked for Phelps Dodge Corporation in Morenci for 39 years as a concentrator supervisor. Raymond loved being in the outdoors, fishing, hunting and having cookouts with his family.

He admired and had great love for all his grandchildren: Zachary Fortin, Stephanie Peru, Brittany Jackson, Vincent Peru and Liandra Peru. Great-grandchildren are Hunter Terrazas and Brewer Peru.

A celebration of Raymond’s life luncheon will be at the American Legion in Safford following interment.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Peru was celebrated Saturday, April 2, 2016, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church by Rev. Vincent Ahar. Concluding services, with military honors conferred by the Gila Valley Veterans’ Honor Guard, followed in the Safford Cemetery.

A rosary and prayer vigil was prayed Friday evening, April 1, 2016, at 7:00 p.m., at Vining Funeral Home’s “Chapel of the Valley,” by Deacon Carl Vessels.

Family received friends Friday evening, April 1, 2016, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., at the Vining Funeral Home, and Saturday morning, April 2, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 a.m., at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.
