SAFFORD — A neighbor concerned about possible domestic violence occurring in the adjoining apartment resulted in a man ingesting heroin.

Safford Police responded to the neighbor, who said she heard a woman calling out for a man to stop hitting her.

Police contacted the victim, who said she and the man were just verbally arguing and nothing physical had occurred.

However, the man, identified as Santiago Romero, reportedly told officers he “might” have pushed the victim “with his body” and pulled her hair.

The neighbor said she saw Romero and the victim arrive at the apartment complex, and the neighbor claimed to witness Romero grab the victim by the back of the neck.

After being taken into custody, Romero reportedly told officers he became scared when he heard them announce their presence, so he swallowed about three grams of heroin. Romero was transported to Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center for about six hours of observation and, when he was medically cleared, he was booked into Graham County Jail for domestic violence assault.
