SAFFORD — The Bureau of Land Management Safford Field Office and Freeport-McMoRan provided visual aids for members of the public interested in learning more about a proposed land exchange.
The two entities invited the public to view the maps and provide feedback at the public meeting Wednesday, at the Graham County General Services Building.
There was no presentation, and neither entity had a person on scene authorized to speak on the record with the press. However, representatives were able to answer some questions in one-on-one settings.

The proposed land swap includes the acquisition of five non-federal parcels consisting of approximately 5,700 acres by the United States in exchange for federal parcels, consisting of approximately 24,600 acres, to FMC.
The land that would enter the public domain would expand recreation access, including the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area, and enhance wildlife habitat.
While attendees could submit written comment during Wednesday’s meeting, those who could not attend may still submit comments through Sept. 14.
