Prescribed burns planned for San Carlos Apache Reservation

SAN CARLOS — The San Carlos Apache Forest Resources Program announced there will be a series of prescribed burns over the next 36 days.

The first series of burns will take place in the Point of Pines, Malay Gap and Turnbull forest management units, covering almost 6,000 acres.

The burns will take place from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, from Oct. 39 through Nov. 29, weather permitting.

The second series of burns will take place in the Hilltop unit, covering almost 4,000 acres. Those burns will take place from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily, from Nov. 12 through Nov. 27, weather permitting.

There are no road closures planned during the burns.

During the summer wildfire season, the San Carlos Apache Reservation suffered multiple blazes, including the Watch fire that peaked at nearly 2,200 acres and destroyed 21 homes, leaving 73 people homeless.
