CLIFTON — The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests are planning prescribed fire operations beginning as early as Thursday, April 23, pending all required approvals.
The work is estimated to continue throughout the next week as weather conditions allow. Prescribed fires are used to help reduce overgrown vegetation to help protect local communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires.
The East Eagle Rx prescribed fire operation will take place in the Clifton Ranger District, and will consist of 800 acres north of Baldy Bill Point, approximately 10 miles south of Hannagan Meadow, and two miles west of U.S. Highway 191.
Those areas may close to the public for several days for public safety. Watch for warning signs along roads near all prescribed fire areas before and during burns.
Greenlee County emergency management officials will be notified when burning begins.
Smoke may be visible from portions of Highway 191 and the community along Eagle Creek. All private landowners near the project area will be notified prior to implementation.
For more detailed information about air quality, go to AirNow online or download the app. When driving, slow down and turn on your headlights when you encounter smoke on the road.
If weather conditions warrant, scheduled prescribed fire activities may be canceled.
The total acreage to be burned is 1,000 acres, with the first 200 acres completed on March 6.
Stay informed about the scheduled prescribed fires through the forest website, social media channels, and InciWeb, the interagency incident information system.
