SAFFORD — A fire alarm that caused evacuation of Safford High School Thursday was the result of a misplaced piece of kitchen plastic.

On its social media, Safford Police reported the alarm went off at about 9:30 a.m. and initially indicated fire in the daycare building.

However, upon arrival, officers found no flames and determined the alarm was the result of smoke in the Culinary Arts kitchen. The smoke was created by a plastic item placed on top of a hot stove.

Students were returned to class, and there was no major damage to the facilities and no injuries.
