PIMA — Pima Town Councilman Lucas Hoopes said he’s “had it up to about here with multi-family homes here in Pima” when trying to convince his fellow council members Tuesday to vote against the rezone of a parcel of land on Main Street from single family residential to multi-family.
While acknowledging the need for more housing, Hoopes said having multi-family housing in the same neighborhoods as single family “completely changes the dynamics of the community.”
“Is that who we want to cater to, though?” Hoopes asked. “Send them to Safford.”

Only one person — Vice Mayor Theresa Bailey — joined with Hoopes in opposing the rezoning request, which passed 3-2 during Tuesday’s regular meeting of the Pima Town Council.
The property is located at 130 S. Main Street, across from Pima Elementary School and just to the south of the parcel that will house the World War II memorial currently under development.
Despite previously being zoned single family residential, the building originally housed two businesses, a restaurant and a beauty shop, and has two separate entrances.
