PIMA — The saga of new welcome signs to the Town of Pima continued Tuesday.

During its regular meeting, the Town Council directed Town Manager Vernon Batty to cost out printing of two new fabric signs to be placed over billboards on U.S. Highway 70, on the east and west town limits.

Batty referenced the existing sign on the east of town, purchased by the Pima High School Booster Club to celebrate the Pima girls’ back-to-back state basketball championships in 2021 and 2022.

“That one cost about $1,500 to get that printed out,” Batty said. “I don’t have the current price, but I know it’s not terribly expensive.”

The council viewed multiple samples, two with solid backgrounds and photos of the town embedded in the lettering, and two with photo backgrounds and solid lettering. The designs were submitted free-of-charge by Marley Grant.

Batty said he will bring back cost information at a future council meeting for final action.

For years, the council has been debating the type of welcome signs it would like for the town, first favoring a statuary type of signage mimicking a weather vein.

In 2022, the council considered a marquee sign in front of Town Hall, featuring the town logo and a digital billboard.

In other action: The Town Council presented plaques of appreciation to the Pima boys and girls basketball teams for their postseason performance.

The boys won the 2A state title, and the girls advanced to the semifinals of the Copper Division Tournament (featuring the top 1A, 2A and 3A teams), losing to eventual champion 3A Tuba City.
