On Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at approximately 6:35 pm a passenger vehicle traveling east on Highway collided with a pedestrian who reportedly ran into the eastbound lane of traffic. The pedestrian, identified as 89-year-old Steve Fernandez of Safford, sustained fatal injuries.
Traffic was rerouted up Montierth Lane while the accident was investigated and cleared. Several accident were reported on the detour route, including a diesel truck that went off the road into a ditch.
