October is costume month in the Gila Valley

SAFFORD — Adults and children who enjoy dressing in costume will have plenty of chances to show their costuming skills this month.

In addition to dressing up to go trick-or-treating on Halloween, Oct. 31, there will be two costume opportunities the week before.

The City of Safford’s annual Harvest Festival will take place on the lawn in front of Safford City Hall on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The costume contest, sponsored by Arizona Fan Fest — the Gila Valley’s comic book convention taking place in Downtown Safford Spring 2022 — will offer prizes in four categories: Youth (ages 0-12), Teen (13-19), Adult (20 and older) and Group (two or more people sharing a common theme).

Harvest Festival will also offer a number of activities for children, including pumpkin carving and pumpkin bowling, scarecrow ring toss, face painting, sack races, stick horse races and more.

Cosplayers will also be able to trick-or-treat Safford’s Downtown area — between 8th Avenue on the west to 3rd Street on the east, and U.S. Highway 70 on the north to 8th Street on the south — during the Harvest Festival. Businesses that wish to participate and be included on a map given to trick-or-treaters at Harvest Festival should contact Pam Frost at pfrost@saffordaz.gov or Taylor Banks at 928-965-2493.

The other costume event is also taking place Saturday, Oct. 23, at New Life City Church, with a multi-vendor Fall Festival from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

A children’s costume contest will take place at 4 p.m.; trunk-or-treat from 5-8 p.m.; and food, games, youth activities and raffles throughout the day.
