PHOENIX — One of the state legislators representing Graham, Greenlee and Cochise counties is stepping down.

In a letter to state House Speaker Rusty Bowers, dated Oct. 1, Rep. Becky Nutt resigned her seat effective Nov. 1.

“It has been my great honor to serve with you, sir, and to be part of your leadership this past three years,” Nutt wrote.

The letter does not detail why she is leaving with a year remaining on her term. Gila Valley Central’s calls and texts to Nutt were not immediately returned.

Nutt, who was first elected to the state House in 2016 and won re-election in 2018 and 2020, has served as Majority Whip since 2018. Also in 2018, she was named co-chair of the rural caucus for the American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC.

Nutt was the legislator who twice introduced a bill that would allow Eastern Arizona College to offer four-year degrees. Her bill was signed into law this year.

Although she campaigned as being from Clifton, it is the Cochise County Board of Supervisors that will appoint a replacement, because her most recent address was listed as Pearce.
