No one hurt when shots fired at Thatcher Police officer

THATCHER — A man who is reported to have shot a firearm at a Thatcher Police officer is in Graham County Jail.

The officer was in the area of U.S. Highway 70 and 8th Avenue Wednesday, at 9:46 p.m., performing a civil standby for a couple at a nearby residence.

After about six minutes, the suspect — identified as Andrew James Lund, 32 — came out of a neighboring residence and discharged a firearm twice in the direction of the officer and the couple. Lund then retreated back into the neighboring residence.

Responding to the call of shots fired at an officer, Safford and Pima Police officers, Graham County Sheriff’s deputies and Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers assisted Thatcher Police in securing a perimeter around the house where Lund was located.

After a short period of negotiation, Lund exited the house and was taken into custody without further incident.

“Thankfully, this very dangerous situation was resolved with no injuries to anyone,” Thatcher Police Chief Shaffen Woods said in a prepared statement.

Lund was booked into Graham County Jail on charges of aggravated assault, disorderly conduct with a weapon and discharging a firearm within the town’s limits. Investigation into the incident is ongoing.

“We would like to extend a huge thank you to the agencies . . . that responded to assist us with this situation and helped bring it to a safe resolution. We greatly appreciate them,” Woods said.
