PHOENIX — Gov. Katie Hobbs signed into law HB 2484 into law, requiring public school districts and charter schools to enact policies restricting student access to social media and wireless communication devices during the school day.

The new law provides exemptions for students with medical conditions and when the school’s curriculum requires use of wireless devices during the school day.

Districts must also allow parents and students to be able to contact each other.

Districts must also provide copies of the new policies to students and parents at the beginning of each school year.

“Education requires attention, and attention is exactly what today’s students are being robbed of by addictive devices and endless scrolling,” said State Rep. Beverly Pingerelli, who sponsored the bill. “We’ve drawn a clear line: Arizona classrooms are for learning, not TikTok. Teachers can finally reclaim their classrooms, and parents can feel confident their kids are actually focused on school — not their screens.”

While the new law specifically addresses public school districts and charter schools; private, parochial and home schools are not subject to the new requirements.
