BYLAS — Following the successful development of a sports complex in the Gilson Wash District last year, the San Carlos Apache Tribe is turning its attention to Bylas, and is getting some help as well.

On Wednesday, the Phoenix Suns presented the tribe with a $10,000 grant to be used for development of a sports complex in Bylas, near Stanley Hall.

“The first phase is going to be a skate park,” said Bylas Councilman David Nozie. “We did a survey with Fort Thomas High School last year, and we got good feedback for what type of skate complex they want.”

Second and final phases will include a multi-use field for football and soccer, baseball/softball fields and a T-ball field, and expansion to five outdoor basketball courts.

October 2024 is the target date for completion.

Development of more youth sports facilities isn’t the only thing happening in the Bylas area. Nozie said development has started on 16 new homes in the community, and Bylas recently celebrated the groundbreaking for a new health facility.

“Once the facility is done, we’re talking about 100 to 300 employed personnel will be able to work in that health facility there,” Nozie said, adding completion is targeted for January 2025.

He also said talks have started about establishing a satellite ASU campus on the reservation, as well as development of a Mt. Turnbull Middle School.
