New scam seeks money to stop a sheriff-issued warrant

SAFFORD — A new scam is making the rounds of Graham County; this time invoking the names of local officials.

At least two people have received calls telling them there is a warrant for their arrest for missing jury duty, but payment of a fine over the phone will quash the warrant.

The caller is telling the potential victims that the warrants have been signed by either Graham County Sheriff P.J. Allred or Clerk of the Court Heidi Torrio.

“Number one, if there was a warrant for somebody, we wouldn’t call them and tell them about it,” Allred said. “And number two, I can’t issue warrants and neither can Heidi. So our names aren’t anywhere on the warrants, nowhere. The only name on a warrant is the judge’s name, whenever he issues a warrant.”

Allred reminds the public to immediately hang up when anyone demands money over the phone, and to call local law enforcement with any questions and to report the attempted scam.
