THATCHER — The Arizona Legislature recently passed the American Civics Act (A.R.S. 15-701) requiring all students, including students seeking a GED (General Equivalency Degree), must pass a civics exam based on the United States Immigration and Naturalization civics questions. This requirement goes into effect Jan. 1, 2017, and an exam will first be available Jan. 3, 2017, via Pearson VUE Testing Centers.

GED tests are administered at Eastern Arizona College on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 5 p.m. Students can sign up and pay at www.ged.com.

“I encourage candidates to test, if they can, before the end of the year,” said EAC’s Testing Coordinator, Jerri Lukens. “There may be an additional cost to take the Civics exam.”

Individuals needing a refresher class should call the EAC Adult Education Department at (928) 428-6260. Individuals who are unsure of what subjects they still need to pass can call Jerri Lukens at (928) 428-8491 to find out.

For more information contact Lukens at (928) 428-8491 or by email at testing.center@eac.edu or visit the Arizona Department of Education website at www.azed.gov/adultedservices/hse-testing/.
