MORENCI — A recently retired Morenci teacher is a candidate for a statewide honor.

The June newsletter for the Arizona Department of Education spotlighted Kristy Gonzalez and her 33-year career. She started as a special education teacher and ultimately worked with children at all grade levels, finishing her tenure teaching high school health and physical education.

She was named Morenci Teacher of the Year this year and is a candidate for Arizona Rural Schools Association Teacher of the Year.

If she wins, she will be the second consecutive teacher of the year from the region. The 2021 Arizona Rural Schools Association Teacher of the Year was Willcox High School chemistry teacher Ty White.
