Morenci Schools closed Monday due to threat of violence

All Morenci schools are closed today due to an anonymous threat of violence that was alleged to be carried out today. When school district officials became aware of the post Sunday evening, the threat was reported to local law enforcement. The threat was posted anonymously on SnapChat according to the Greenlee County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities are investigating this matter and, according to the Sheriff’s office there will be officers and deputies at all schools tomorrow. Officials do not believe the threat is legitimate, but they are treating the situation as though it’s real. The school district forwarded a lead to law enforcement authorities, who are following up on it.

On a post on the school district’s homepage, Morenci School District Superintendent, Dr. David Woodall said, “Although we do not believe the threat is credible, in an abundance of caution we have cancelled school (tomorrow, November 4th) while local authorities complete their investigation.”
