Thatcher, Ariz – The 20-inch Tinsley Telescope at Eastern Arizona College’s Discovery Park “Gov Aker Observatory” recently experienced issues with its tracking and movement, making it inoperable for night-sky viewing.
Fortunately, through a partnership between EAC, the Mt. Graham International Observatory (MGIO), and the University of Arizona’s Steward Observatory, three members of the MGIO maintenance crew—Shane Olsen, shop superintendent; Armondo Alvarado, lead maintenance mechanic; and Orlando Gutierrez—came to Discovery Park to inspect, clean, and repair the telescope. It is now fully operational and ready for use at Discovery Park’s Saturday evening stargazing events, led by Bob Hiatt, telescope operator.
“Thank you to the MGIO maintenance crew for bringing the 20-inch Tinsley back into operation for the community to enjoy!” said Discovery Park director, Paul Anger.
Telescope History
The 20-inch telescope was originally built in 1963 by the Tinsley Corporation for the U.S. Department of the Navy. After a brief period of military use, it was donated to Kitt Peak National Observatory, which is operated by the University of Arizona’s Steward Observatory. After nearly 30 years of service and research at Kitt Peak, the telescope was retired and later donated to EAC Discovery Park, along with its 20-foot dome, where it remains a vital part of the College’s astronomy programs. It is one of the largest research-grade telescopes available for public use and research at no cost.
The facility, named the Gov Aker Observatory, honors Gov Aker, who served as mayor of Safford from 1986 to 1993 and was instrumental in supporting Discovery Park’s facilities and astronomy education in Eastern Arizona.
Public Viewing Opportunities
The 20-inch Tinsley Telescope is available for night-sky viewing at the Gov Aker Observatory at EAC’s Discovery Park. The observatory is open Saturday evenings from 4 – 9 p.m., with telescope viewing beginning after sundown, weather permitting. Visitors can also experience the “Polaris” Shuttle Simulator on a virtual tour of the solar system—a fun and educational activity for the whole family, offered free of charge.
