THATCHER — Jared Rios is bringing his “go big or go home” philosophy to a new event this weekend.

The owner of Cheecharrone Sk8 Shop has organized the inaugural Madbowl Bash, a skateboarding and music event at Thatcher Skate Park on Saturday, July 17, from noon to 10 p.m.

“I wanted to introduce the Gila Valley to what real skating is; what the potential (is) within skating and what it can do for a community,” Rios said.

Rios said skateboarding can help youths in school, though they may not realize they’re applying geometry and other science principles when attempting a trick.

The event will feature prizes for the best tricks, a board design contest and plenty of live music, with a number of bands traveling from the Phoenix and Tucson areas, including:

● MCLM

● Blind Nothing

● Friends in Hell

● Avra

● Upstairs Neighbors

● Psych Dimension

● Skitzoid

There will also be raffles to benefit House of Hope, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and the Safford High School Bulldog food pantry. Plus food trucks will be on scene to serve throughout the day.
