Lytle’s late run lifts Morenci past Benson 20-14

BENSON, Ariz. — Anthony Rogers, Joel Baca Jr, and Derick Lytle each scored rushing touchdowns to lead Morenci past Benson 20-14 on Thursday night in sloppy, rain-soaked field conditions.

Neither team scored in the opening quarter as wet conditions led to punts and turnovers. Rogers, a senior running back, broke through late in the second quarter with a 4-yard touchdown run, his first of the season, to give the Wildcats a 6-0 halftime lead.

After an extended lightning delay stretched the break, Baca extended the lead in the third with a touchdown run, followed by a two-point conversion for a 14-0 advantage.

Benson (3-3) rallied when junior wideout Wayne Stark caught a 12-yard touchdown pass. Moments later, senior defensive back Rawley Evans came up with an interception to swing momentum. The Bobcats tied it in the fourth quarter with a fumble return for a touchdown.

But Lytle, who entered averaging 73 rushing yards per game, delivered the decisive blow with a 41-yard touchdown run to put Morenci ahead for good.

Morenci improved to 4-2. Benson dropped to 3-3.
