SAFFORD — Arizona Department of Transportation announced that motorists on U.S. Highway 70 in Safford and Thatcher could see some delays starting this week.
Once work begins, Highway 70 will be narrowed to one lane in each direction with alternating east- and westbound travel between mileposts 340 and 350 daily from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Flaggers and a pilot car will assist drivers through the work zone, the speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph, and a 12-foot vehicle width restriction will be in place for the duration of the project.
ADOT is replacing 4.4 miles of pavement between Reay Lane in Thatcher and 8th Street in Safford. The work will also include:
- Improving sidewalk ramps to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act standards
- Improving driveways
- Repairing a box culvert at milepost 337
- Repairing drainage elements
- Replacing signs
The $12.2 million project is expected to be complete by late spring 2026.
