SAFFORD — First Things First recently highlighted the improvements made at a Safford child care center, thanks to a pandemic relief grant.

Kinder Prep Academy was one of three applicants from Graham County, but the only applicant to receive funding. It leveraged the $200,000 grant to expand, cover and fence the outdoor play space; replace light fixtures and upgrade outlets; revamp the storage area; and create a laundry room with new washer and dryer.

Arizona received $65 million in funding for early care and education, and there were 969 applications for more than double that amount, from 14 of Arizona’s 15 counties.

The program was administered by Local Initiatives Support Corporation, Arizona Department of Economic Security and First Things First.
