SAFFORD — The newest wildfire in the area is the Johnny fire, discovered Sunday, June 27, at 3:44 p.m.

The Johnny fire, northeast of Safford, has burned 40 acres thus far and cause has not yet been determined.

The Pinnacle fire is now at 60-percent containment, so focus is shifting to the fire’s aftermath.

A Burned Area Emergency Repair (BEAR) team has been called in to survey the severity of the fire, and starting Monday will begin work to try and minimize impact from potential flooding and erosion.

The fire in the Santa Teresa Wilderness maxed out at 34,417 acres.

Meanwhile, the Bear fire in Greenlee County, near Hannagan Meadow, has grown to 21,700 acres and is at 0-percent containment.

The fire has forced the closure of U.S. Highway 191, from just north of Morenci to Blue Vista.
