Independence Day starts early in the Gila Valley

PIMA — Graham County residents have plenty of activities to choose from for the Fourth of July weekend.

Things start Saturday, July 3, in Pima, with the traditional town breakfast in Heritage Park, located between the library and the fire station. Breakfast starts at 6:30 a.m. and continues while supplies last.

At 8 a.m., attention shifts to Thatcher, with the start of the People’s Parade at the high school to the splash pad park. Once at the park, the town will conduct a flag-raising, followed by a pancake breakfast and finishes with the spraying of children with water by a fire truck.

At 10 a.m., the Pima Pool will open and offers free admission until 6:30 p.m.

Also at 10 a.m., following a flag-raising ceremony in front of the Graham County Courthouse, the Safford Lions Club will present the Gila Valley Independence Day Parade down Safford’s Main Street. Awards will be presented for the following entries:

● Most patriotic

● Most creative

● Most beautiful

● Best performance

● Best bicycle (youths only)

Grand marshal will be Gwendolyn Lewis in memoriam of the late Bill Lewis.

The day’s activities end with a fireworks display at 8 p.m. at the Vard Lines Roping Arena in Pima.

On Sunday, July 4, the Graham County fireworks display at Graham County Fairgrounds will begin at sunset.
