SAFFORD — Safford is ready to tackle 14th Avenue.

On Monday, the City Council awarded the contract to demolish and reconstruct 14th Avenue from Relation Street to the Stone Willow Way-Crimson Canyon Drive intersection.

“It will be an extremely accelerated schedule,” said Lane Henrie, the city’s Public Works director. “We’re going to close that road right after school stops being in session — we got the OK to close that from the school —shut the whole thing down, tear it out and get it done in about 90 days.”

In addition to the roadway, the improvement project includes curb, gutter and sidewalk on both sides of the street and drainage improvements.

The cost is $1.4 million and was awarded to the same company that did the Church Street improvements for the Town of Thatcher.
