Impairment suspected in two-county chase

GLOBE — A vehicle chase that went across two counties ended without injury and the suspect in custody Tuesday.

At 7:06 a.m., an Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper, who was responding to an attempt to locate, stopped a vehicle for reckless driving on U.S. Highway 70, at about milepost 334 in Graham County. The vehicle initially stopped, then took off again, and pursuit was initiated by the trooper.

However, due to the excessive rate of speed, the trooper called off the pursuit for safety reasons. Meanwhile, a Graham County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted the vehicle and initiated pursuit, stopping only when the suspect attempted to strike the deputy’s vehicle.

The suspect vehicle continued traveling westbound, eventually being stopped by DPS at milepost 271 in Gila County at 7:51 a.m.

The suspect, Giovanni Casillas, 29, of Demming, N.M., was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for evaluation, due to suspicion of impairment.

Charges are pending; however, Casillas has a warrant out of San Carlos and felony warrants out of Texas.

No one was injured in the pursuit.
