SAFFORD — The Gila Valley Hiking Club is offering everyone a chance to get out of the heat this weekend.

The club will hike Mount Graham’s Arcadia Trail no. 328, which connects Arcadia and Shannon Campground.

This will be the first hike on the trail since 2017. Flooding following the Frye fire had destroyed the Wet Canyon stream crossing until Fort Grant Prison crews were able to rebuild the crossing. Hikers must also be mindful of a number of downed trees as a result of the fire.

Total distance of hike is 4.9 miles, descending 2,275 feet in elevation. The club will car shuttle from the two ends of the trail. Average time is 3.5 hours, and the hike is considered moderately difficult due to distance and terrain

Hikers are asked to bring water (at least 1.5 liters) and lunch/snacks. Due to fire damage, there is limited shade so bring a hat and sunscreen for sun protection. The trail is rough and rocky so good shoes are required. For meet up information, e-mail gilavalleyhikingclub@gmail.com.
