SAFFORD — The U.S. Forest Service announced today a wildfire is burning in the Fry fire scar on Mount Graham.

The Highwater fire is 0.25 acres on the northeast side of Mount Graham, and was reported at 2:08 a.m. June 19.

Helicopters are in use to assess the fire and develop action plans based on the fire’s behavior; however, due to safety concerns from the steep, rugged terrain and the chance of afternoon thunderstorms, firefighters are currently unable to attack the fire on the ground.

Due to the lack of available fuel and monsoon storm activity, incident command anticipates little movement from the fire. No structures are currently under threat.

Cause of the fire has not yet been released. Smoke is expected to be visible in Safford and Willcox over the next few days.

The Highwater fire is one of two wildfires burning in the area.

The Fish fire has burned 3,704 acres near Fish Creek in northern Greenlee County. It was reported June 10 and is believed to have started from a lightning strike.
