PHOENIX — It’s been a rough first quarter of the 2023-24 flu season in Arizona.

Through Dec. 17, there have been 5,024 confirmed cases of influenza statewide, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services.

That total is 258 percent higher than the five-year average of 1,402 during the same time of year.

Graham County has 55 confirmed cases thus far, up 67 percent from the five-year average, while Greenlee County has 56 cases, which is 164 percent higher than the five-year average. Cochise County is at 130 cases, which is 333 percent more than the five-year average.

To have the best chance at avoiding the flu this season, the Department of Health Services recommends a flu shot, plus regular washing of hands for least 20 seconds, covering coughs with a tissue or sleeve, avoid close contact with those who are sick, and staying home when sick.
