SAFFORD — Saying the county has had its eye on property “for several years to purchase as an option of future expansion of our facilities,” County Manager Dustin Welker received unanimous approval Monday to enter into an escrow agreement to purchase land adjacent to the county’s General Services Building.

The land is located at 821 W. Thatcher Blvd., and the escrow amount is $800,000.

Welker said the county has had the property appraised three times — through the County Assessor’s Office, contracting for a private appraisal and through a third-party appraisal —and the amount being placed in escrow is in inline with all three.

“There’s lots of good things to be said about this,” said Supervisor Paul David. “If this is approved, we’ll wait until after escrow closes and then we’ll probably make a more detailed announcement.”

The parcel is 44,520 square feet and GIS records show the land is owned by James and Monika Weech. It was first recorded as a one-story single-family ranch-style home in 1939, before being converted into a service garage in 1979.
