SAFFORD — The Gila Valley Hiking Club is looking for a few good hikers.

“We were not meeting or hiking for 2020 and part of 2021,” said the club’s Holly Pascoe. “Very happily, there was a lot of interest, even though we weren’t hiking, people kept asking. In late August we resumed hiking again, and we’ve already completed three hikes, all on Mount Graham.”

Moving into cooler weather, the club will begin hiking lower elevations, such as Black Canyon Arch near Fort Thomas, the Chiricahuas and Apache Stronghold in Cochise County, or old railroad beds in Greenlee County.

“We go further afield, on the flat more, in the winter, and up the mountain in the summer,” Pascoe said.

Hikers can hike at their own rate, as long as they communicate with the hike leaders, and families are encouraged to participate together.

There are no memberships or dues required to join in on any club hike; however, proper gear — hiking boots, hat, proper clothing, water, sun screen, etc. — is required.

The club is also looking for with knowledge and expertise about area trails to serve as hike leaders.
