CLIFTON — The Gila Valley Hiking Club is heading to Greenlee County this weekend — weather permitting.

The club plans to hike Negro Canyon, a slot canyon along the Morenci Southern Railroad. Hikers will find a large railroad tie above the narrow slot canyon, as well as two old steel bridges.

The hike is 2.5 miles and considered moderately easy.

Hikers will meet at the DRG Technologies parking lot in Safford on Saturday at 8 a.m., for the trip to the hike’s starting point, along the Gila River near Clifton.

Hikers are asked to bring at least 1.5 liters of water, snacks or a light lunch, and sun protection. Dressing in layers is recommended. The National Weather Service is currently predicting a 70 percent chance of rain in the Clifton area Saturday.

In the event of rain, the hike will be postponed one week, and the club will announce the postponement on the Gila Valley Hiking Club Facebook page.
