Former DPS Trooper Arrested by FBI

Former trooper, Rene Algara, was arrested on 21 felony charges

Tucson, Arizona— On Saturday, September 28, 2019, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), in coordination with Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) arrested former AZDPS employee Rene Algara, as a result of an FBI criminal investigation. Previous to his arrest by the FBI, Algara was terminated by the Department.

Algara was arrested on 21 felony charges related to money laundering and five felony charges related to falsifying government documents.

Algara began his employment with AZDPS on February 20, 2016, and was assigned to the Highway Patrol Division, Cochise County.

This remains an active FBI investigation and all questions related to the criminal investigation are to be directed to the FBI.

Algara is being held in the Pima County jail on a $50,000 bond.
